Leading research to understand human evolution from archaeological and anthropological perspectives
About ICArEHB Research
OUR MISSION
The Interdisciplinary Center for Archaeology and Evolution of Human Behaviour (ICArEHB) is an international research center within the University of Algarve in Faro, Portugal.
The mission of ICArEHB is to develop an integrative understanding of past human adaptations. We seek to establish interdisciplinary perspectives to address key aspects of the human journey by investigating the archaeological record and using present analogs, including extant primates, to model behavioral resilience, change, and innovation through time.
ICArEHB research is organized into 5 research themes. Click HERE to learn more about them and which ones may interest you.
ICArEHB also houses numerous laboratories and resources to support the research projects and priorities. Click HERE to learn more about these facilities.

ICArEHB research focuses on INTERACTIONS

Biological
Interactions
The story of the modern human lineage is a history of interactions among many different groups of people. Between them and among them, how did their biological interactions influence which groups survived and which groups went extinct?

Cultural
Interactions
Culture and technology unifies groups, but it can also be used to exclude. What factors influence cultural and technological transmission and how did this impact past people and societies?

Environmental
Interactions
Humans do not just react to changes in their environments. They shape their environments as much as their environments shape them. How have these interactions influenced the evolution of modern humans, their technologies, and ability to acquire and produce food and other resources?
