Research Interests

His current research interests are centred on the application of micromorphological techniques to the study of site formation processes at archaeological sites. These include Pleistocene caves in France (Pech de l’Azé IV, La Ferrassie, Roc de Marsal), Flores, Indonesia (Liang Bua), Siberia (Denisova) and the more recent Iron-Age/Roman/Muslim site of Torre d’en Galmés in Menorca.

Short Bio

He has published a number of articles on archaeological soil micromorphology, demonstrating the significance of the technique in unravelling site histories.  He has also co-authored books on micromorphology and geoarchaeology including Soils and Micromorphology in Archaeology (M.A. Courty, P. Goldberg, R.I. Macphail, Cambridge University Press, 1989), Practical and Theoretical Geoarchaeology (with R.I. Macphail, Wiley-Blackwell, 2006), Applied Soils and Micromorphology in Archaeology (Macphail, R.I. and P. Goldberg Cambridge University Press, 2018), and the forthcoming, Reconstructing Archaeological Sites: Understanding the Geoarchaeological Matrix (Karkanas, P., P. He received the Rip Rapp Award (Archaeological Geology Division) from the Geological Society of America, in 2002, the Fryxell Award (Society for American Archaeology) in 2008, and the Pomerantz Award from the Archaeological Institute of America for Scientific Contributions to Archaeology in 2010. In 2004 and February-April, 2013 he was the recipient of Alexander von Humboldt Senior Award at the Institute of Scientific Archaeology, University of Tübingen, Germany.
